Contrasting in Beijing

China is the oldest continuous civilization in existence. Five thousand years of history means lots of changes. After all, one has to stay abreast of the times, update yourself or be left behind. Unlike Greece, where everything ancient and modern seem to be stacked in layers, one slowly built on top of the other whilst layers are simultaneously being peeled away. But China feels different. Modern and ancient are on the same level. Twisted metal skyscrapers and ancient temples right next to each other. Megamalls and tranquil canals sitting side by side.
